Course Overview
The course is designed to ensure operators understand both the principles of safe operation and the practical handling characteristics of industrial tow tractors in a range of workplace environments, including warehouses, factories, airports, distribution centres, and outdoor yards.
Through a combination of classroom-based theory and hands-on practical training, delegates will develop the competence required to manoeuvre tow tractors and trailers safely, control loads effectively, and work responsibly around other vehicles and pedestrians.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the course, delegates will be able to:

Understand their legal responsibilities as an operator under relevant health and safety legislation, including the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and PUWER

Identify the key components, controls, and safety features of industrial tow tractors

Carry out thorough pre-use and daily safety inspections, including defect identification and reporting

Safely drive or move an industrial tractor with or without trailers

Correctly couple and uncouple trailers and ancillary equipment

Assess load weights, trailer capacities, and towing limits to ensure safe operation

Apply safe steering, braking, and manoeuvring techniques, particularly when towing multiple trailers

Operate safely in confined areas, pedestrian zones, and busy operational environments

Understand the causes of instability, jack-knifing, and loss of control, and how to prevent them

Follow correct parking, securing, and shutdown procedures

Operate in a manner that minimises risk to themselves, other employees, pedestrians, equipment, and property
